Frequently Asked Questions

About Orgain

What is Orgain?

Orgain® is a line of nutritional products including nutrition shakes, protein shakes, protein powders, and protein bars that are incredibly delicious and packed with the most nutritious and highest quality ingredients in the world. Just as important as what’s in Orgain® products is what’s not in them: all of our products are non-GMO, gluten free, soy free, and do not contain artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, or preservatives; and nearly all Orgain products are Certified Organic.

What is the story behind Orgain?

Orgain® was founded in 2008 by Andrew Abraham, M.D., a physician and cancer survivor. After being diagnosed with cancer, Dr. Abraham underwent extensive treatment, forcing him to rely on liquid nutrition. However, he found that most “nutritional” drinks were anything but. Mainstream brands were loaded with high fructose corn syrup, genetically modified soy, artificial flavors, and preservatives, and they tasted horrible. He created Orgain® out of necessity and made it his mission to marry the highest quality ingredients with great taste. The smoothies Andrew made in his own kitchen during this time became the inspiration for Orgain Nutrition Shakes -- the first Orgain product -- many years later.  Now Orgain has expanded to include a variety of other clean, organic nutrition products.

Is Orgain a vegan company?

We are not a vegan company, but we do offer certified vegan products and advocate for the inclusion of plant based protein sources as part of a healthful lifestyle. Our vegan options include our Vegan Organic Nutrition Shakes, 21g Organic Plant Based Protein Shakes, Organic Plant Based Protein Powder, Organic Meal Powder, Organic Superfoods Powder, Organic Plant Protein Powder + Greens, Organic Protein + Superfoods, Organic Protein Almond Milk, and Organic Protein Bars.

Why is it called Orgain?

The name Orgain® was created by the founder of the company, Dr. Andrew Abraham, by combining the words “organic” and “gain.” Orgain has a deep commitment to using organic ingredients, and we believe that people can “gain health, gain energy, and gain life” through clean, wholesome nutrition. Dr. Abraham has personally experienced dramatically improved health and energy by making changes to his diet.

Why does Orgain taste so much better than other nutritional products?

The inspiration for the Orgain® formulations comes from Dr. Abraham’s kitchen, so the focus is always on real, food-based ingredients. Using premium ingredients like organic cocoa, organic vanilla beans and real organic fruits and veggies makes for delicious products that taste like they come from the kitchen instead of a lab.

Is Orgain Made in the USA?

Any of our ready-to-drink shakes can be used as a delicious and nutritious base for a smoothie. Our powders are very versatile and can be used in a variety of recipes from pancakes to popsicles, and even in soups and stews. You can use the recipes on our Clean Nutrition Blog or get creative in the kitchen with our products by coming up with recipes of your own!

Orgain ready-to-drink shakes should be consumed within 2 hours of opening if they are not refrigerated or within 72 hours if refrigerated after opening.

After opening, how long is Orgain Protein Almond Milk safe to drink?

Orgain Almond Milk + Protein should be consumed within 2 hours of opening if it is not refrigerated or within 7 days if refrigerated after opening.

After mixing or blending, how long are Orgain powders safe to drink?

All Orgain powders should be consumed within 2 hours of mixing with liquid if not refrigerated or within 24 hours if refrigerated.

How should I store your products?

Orgain powders, bars, and unopened ready-to-drink shakes and almond milks are safe when stored at room temperature. Because they taste best when served cold, ready-to-drink shakes and almond milks can also be stored in the refrigerator. It is not recommended to store any Orgain powder in the refrigerator, as the moisture may cause clumping and shorten the shelf life of the product.

What is the shelf life of your products?

Powder products are guaranteed fresh 2 years from the date of manufacture. Ready-to-drink shakes, bars, and almond milks are guaranteed fresh one year (12 months) from the date of manufacture if left unopened. The expiration date can be found on the canister, bottle, or TetraPak. We do not recommend consuming expired product.

Why do I need to shake Orgain's ready-to-drink shakes?

Over time, solids in shakes such as cocoa powder may settle to the bottom. Shaking Orgain ready-to-drink shakes before serving helps to maintain product consistency.

Allergen Information

Are any of the top 8 allergens (soy, wheat, eggs, fish, shellfish, dairy, peanuts, or tree nuts) found in Orgain's products?

Orgain products are not formulated with eggs, wheat, soy, fish, or shellfish. Peanuts, tree nuts, and dairy are used as ingredients in certain products. Please check the list of ingredients for each specific product you are considering trying.

Do any Orgain products contain corn?

While we do not use corn as an ingredient in any of our products, the erythritol we use is derived from organic, non-GMO corn. A limited number of additional ingredients may also use corn during processing but in much smaller quantities. If you have questions regarding a specific ingredient please email us at medinfo@drinkorgain.com

Are Orgain's products produced in dedicated peanut and/or tree nut free facilities?

Our products are not produced in dedicated nut-free (peanut and tree nut) facilities. However, safety is of utmost importance at Orgain, which is why all of our facilities follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to minimize the risk of cross contamination. These procedures include: segregation of all allergen ingredients from non-allergen ingredients, strict sanitation procedures, and an allergen testing program that is conducted prior to each production run to ensure that no allergen traces remain after cleaning. If the allergy is severe in nature we recommend speaking with your healthcare practitioner to decide whether or not Orgain is right for you.

Are Orgain's products produced in dedicated gluten free facilities?

Our Organic Nutrition Shake, Vegan Organic Nutrition Shake, 26g Organic Protein Shake, 21g Organic Protein Plant Based Shake, 20g Clean Protein Shake, and Organic Protein Almond Milk ARE produced in a facility that does not handle any gluten containing ingredients. The remainder of our product line, however, is not produced in dedicated gluten free facilities. Because safety is of utmost importance at Orgain, we take extraordinary measures to ensure our gluten free products comply with the FDA requirements to be labeled gluten free. None of our products contain gluten containing ingredients including wheat, rye, and barley and their cross grains. All of our facilities follow a stringent Allergen Control Plan and observe Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to minimize the risk of cross contamination. These procedures include: scheduling products with allergens at the end of the production cycle, segregation of all allergen ingredients from non-allergen ingredients, and scrupulous sanitation practices followed by inspection and testing to ensure no allergenic material is left on the equipment that could contaminate the next batch. If you have doubts, we recommend speaking with your healthcare practitioner to decide whether Orgain is right for you.

Do you conduct testing to ensure that your products are gluten free?

We require a Certificate of Analysis (that includes gluten) from all our vendors to ensure they test their ingredients for gluten, especially those that are most at risk for contamination such as grains, flours and starches. Our Quality Team also verifies compliance by sending our products to an accredited third-party lab for gluten testing.

What are the FDA requirements to call a food "gluten free"?

Foods may be labeled “gluten-free” if they are inherently gluten free; or do not contain an ingredient that is: 1) a gluten-containing grain (e.g., spelt wheat); 2) derived from a gluten-containing grain that has not been processed to remove gluten (e.g., wheat flour); or 3) derived from a gluten-containing grain that has been processed to remove gluten (e.g., wheat starch), if the use of that ingredient results in the presence of 20 ppm or more gluten in the food. Also, any unavoidable presence of gluten in the food must be less than 20 parts per million (ppm).

Is there any soy in Orgain products?

Orgain does not use soy as an ingredient in any of its products.

About Ingredients and Packaging

Do any Orgain products contain artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors, preservatives, additives?

No, no, no, no and no.

Do Orgain products contain caffeine?

While there is no added caffeine in any of our products, our creamy chocolate fudge, iced café mocha, and iced matcha latte flavors use organic cocoa, organic flavorings, and organic matcha that have a very small amount of naturally occurring caffeine.

Do Orgain products contain carrageenan?

No, all of our products are carrageenan free.

Do Orgain products contain GMOs?

Orgain is opposed to the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food. Most Orgain Products are certified under the USDA National Organic program. The use of genetic engineering or GMOs is prohibited in organic products. This means an organic farmer can’t plant GMO seeds, an organic cow cannot be fed GMO alfalfa or corn, and an organic producer cannot use any GMO ingredients. To meet the USDA Organic regulations, farmers and processors must show they are not using GMOs and that they are protecting their products from contact with prohibited substances from farm to table. For those products not certified organic, Orgain requires suppliers to demonstrate that the ingredient was produced without using genetic modification.

Does Orgain conduct heavy metals testing on its products?

Recently, you may have heard reports about heavy metals in popular protein products. At Orgain, we take the purity of our own organic protein powders extremely seriously. It’s no exaggeration to say that the wholesomeness of our products and the health of our friends and customers is at the absolute center of everything we do.

That’s why we work closely with our supplier partners to assure that only ingredients of the very highest quality are ever used in our products. To guarantee this quality, we require testing of those at elevated risk for heavy metals, and we will not use ingredients that don’t meet our standards. We continue this vigilance throughout our manufacturing process using spot checks and additional tests to maintain our industry-leading standards in every single scoop.

Minerals like calcium, lead, iron, and cadmium, of course, are naturally occurring elements in the Earth’s soil, and pollution adds additional amounts. As a result, they’re found in trace amounts in virtually everything we eat. When food plants grow, they absorb these minerals through their roots and into their fibers. This is true whether the food is home-grown broccoli, store-bought spinach, or the organic yellow peas, chia seeds, and brown rice from which we make Orgain. A smoothie or a salad, it doesn’t matter—our meals will always contain very tiny natural levels of these substances, and modern test methods will be able to find even the most negligible amounts. That’s the way nature works and why it’s virtually impossible to produce food—protein powder or otherwise—that contains zero heavy metal minerals.

It’s also important to understand how our bodies treat these minerals. In plants, the minerals become physically bound to the plant’s fibers (a process called chelation) and when we consume the plants, most of the minerals pass harmlessly through us undigested. For example, only 20% of the very small amounts of lead that plants absorb is ever available to our own bodies. For cadmium, the figure is even lower at just 4%.  This is very different from how our bodies would respond if we consumed these minerals by themselves, or in lead paint, for example.

Despite these explanations, we recognize and understand that consumers are concerned about the presence of these metals in food products. Our commitment to you is that Orgain Products will always be made with the very cleanest ingredients available, and we’ll never use any ingredient that fails to meet our rigorous requirements. Misleading headlines and sensationalist reports aside, that’s why you can be sure our powders will always be among the safest foods you can eat. Anything less just wouldn’t be the way nature—or we, ourselves—intended.

How is the stevia used in your products grown and processed?

The organic stevia leaf we use in certain products is grown and processed under strict NOP guidelines, which are reviewed every year to ensure the product’s integrity.  Stevia extraction is a process similar to steeping tea leaves, wherein the organic leaf material is gently heated to extract the desired “steviol glycoside” compounds.  The liquid left over is then evaporated, leaving only the desired compounds.  The FDA actually stipulates that stevia extract used in finished foods and beverages must be a minimum of 95% total steviol glycosides, and ours is 98%+.

Do Orgain products contain lactose?

Our Organic Nutrition Shakes and Kids Protein Organic Nutrition Shakes are 99.7% lactose free. All of our vegan products are inherently lactose free because they do not contain dairy.

What exactly are sugar alcohols/erythritol?

Sugar alcohols are not, as their name implies, alcohols at all. They are named this way because they are structurally a combination of a carbohydrate and an alcohol, but are perfectly safe because they don't contain ethanol, which contributes to the negative effects commonly associated with alcohol. Sugar alcohols can be found naturally in fruits, but they're also added to foods to help reduce sugar content. Historically, sugar alcohols like maltitol and sorbitol have been known to cause gastrointestinal (GI) issues because they can pull water into the intestine or get fermented by gut bacteria and cause symptoms like gas and bloating. However, erythritol is quite different as studies show that an individual can consume up to 50g/day without causing GI distress. And, at only 0.24 calories per gram erythritol helps to sweeten without causing any of the harmful metabolic effects of excess sugar.

Why do you use erythritol as a sweetener in some of your products?

We use erythritol derived from organic corn because of its pleasant taste, low caloric value, and minimal effect on blood sugar. It sweetens, but is not recognized as a sugar and therefore has a minimal glycemic effect. We chose erythritol over other types of sugar alcohols like maltitol and sorbitol as they have historically been known to cause gastrointestinal (GI) issues because they can pull water into the intestine or get fermented by gut bacteria and cause symptoms like gas and bloating. However, erythritol is quite different as studies show that an individual can consume up to 50g/day without causing GI distress. And, at only 0.24 calories per gram erythritol helps to sweeten without causing any of the harmful metabolic effects of excess sugar. And, at only 0.24 calories per gram erythritol helps to sweeten without causing any of the harmful metabolic effects of excess sugar.

Why do you use organic cane sugar in some of your products?

We use organic cane sugar in three of our products: Organic Nutrition Shakes, Vegan Organic Nutrition Shakes, and Kids Organic Protein Nutrition Shakes. Unrefined cane sugar contains 17 amino acids, 11 minerals, and 6 vitamins, including antioxidants that may help reverse oxidative damage. Nonetheless, we believe that even good sugars should be consumed in moderation. This is why we use less sugar than conventional brands. We also offer a number of products that contain 1g or less of added sugar including our 26g Organic Protein Shakes, 21g Organic Protein Plant Based Shakes, and our Organic Plant Based Protein Powder.

Are all of your bottles BPA free?

Yes.

Is the packaging for Orgain products recyclable?

The Tetra Pak packaging we use for our Organic Nutrition Shakes, Vegan Organic Nutrition Shakes, Kids Organic Protein Nutrition Shakes, and our Organic Protein Almond Milk is made from recycled paper and is recyclable. The containers we use for our powder products are made from #2 plastic, which is recyclable in most places. The bottles we use for our 26g Organic Protein Shake and 21g Organic Protein Plant Based Shake are made of #7 plastic, which is recyclable in some areas. Please check with your local recycling facility. Unfortunately, the wrappers for our Organic Protein Bars are not recyclable.

Are Orgain products considered Whole 30/Paleo compliant?

Orgain products are not paleo or Whole30™-compliant. We use whole food ingredients such as grains, legumes, and plant-based sweeteners, none of which are permitted on these particular diet plans.

Is Orgain Protein Powder considered "raw"?

Our protein is not classified as "raw". However, it is important to keep in mind that the "raw" claim on protein powders can be somewhat misleading. Raw foods, by nature, are very minimally processed, but when creating protein powder this is nearly impossible. The ingredients that go into protein powders need to be milled, processed, and sanitized in a way that makes them both safe and effective for consumption, which does require the use of heat. Unfortunately, at this time there are no government standards or definition for this term, which allows for a lot of grey area when using the term on a product’s label.

None of Orgain’s products are Halal certified. However, the following products do not contain ingredients that are forbidden according to Muslim dietary laws:

Are Orgain products vegan friendly?

Our Organic Plant Based Protein Powder, Vegan Organic Nutrition Shakes, 21g Organic Protein Plant Based Shakes, Organic Meal Powder, Organic Superfoods Powder, Organic Protein Bars, and Organic Protein Almond Milk do not contain animal or animal by products and are certified vegan products by Vegan Action.

Are Orgain products vegetarian?

All Orgain products except for our Collagen Peptides are appropriate for vegetarians that choose to consume dairy.

Is Orgain safe during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding?

Orgain products are made from whole food ingredients and do not contain ingredients that pregnant women are generally directed to avoid.  Additionally, the vast majority* of Orgain products are Certified Organic, which means they are made without synthetic hormones, antibiotics, toxic pesticides, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, and GMOs.

Current science shows that consuming adequate protein during pregnancy can be helpful in preventing preeclampsia, which can be a serious medical condition.

For those concerned about caffeine consumption, there is no added caffeine in any Orgain products.  However, our creamy chocolate fudge, iced café mocha, and iced matcha latte flavors use organic cocoa, organic flavorings and organic matcha that have a very small amount of naturally occurring caffeine.

Because every individual and pregnancy is different, we recommend you check with your healthcare provider to ensure that Orgain is right for you.

Note: * The Grass Fed Whey Protein Powder and 20g Clean Protein Shakes are not USDA Certified Organic. However, the protein we use in them is sourced entirely from New Zealand where agricultural practices restrict the use of toxic pesticides and synthetic hormones.
